Many children struggle with reading for different reasons, including dyslexia, language processing difficulties, limited phonics instruction, attention challenges, or gaps in foundational reading skills. A comprehensive evaluation can help identify the underlying cause and determine the most effective intervention.
Signs of dyslexia vary by age and may include delayed speech, difficulty learning letter sounds, trouble reading accurately or fluently, poor spelling, and difficulty remembering sight words. Early identification allows children to receive evidence-based intervention sooner.
Children often avoid reading when it feels frustrating or overwhelming. Building confidence through structured, personalized instruction and celebrating small successes can help make reading a more enjoyable experience.
The best approach is consistent, evidence-based instruction combined with daily reading practice, positive encouragement, and individualized support. Structured Literacy approaches such as Orton-Gillingham are highly effective for many struggling readers.
Structured Literacy is an evidence-based approach that teaches reading in an explicit, systematic, cumulative way. It focuses on phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, spelling, and reading comprehension and is recommended for students with dyslexia.
Only a qualified professional can diagnose dyslexia. However, if your child struggles with reading accuracy, spelling, decoding, or reading fluency despite appropriate instruction, an evaluation may be recommended.
Parents can arrange a psycho-educational evaluation through a licensed psychologist or qualified evaluator. We can also help guide families toward appropriate evaluation resources and next steps.
iReading TUTOR offers both in-home and online evidence-based reading intervention. We serve families throughout many areas of the United States and Canada by matching students with qualified learning specialists.
Difficulty remembering sight words may indicate weaknesses in phonological processing, orthographic mapping, or other foundational reading skills. Explicit, structured instruction helps many children build automatic word recognition.
Yes. Dyslexia often runs in families. Having a parent or sibling with dyslexia increases the likelihood that a child may also experience reading difficulties.
Dyslexia is a lifelong learning difference, but with early, evidence-based intervention, children can become successful, confident readers and develop strong literacy skills.
Every child is different. According to research, students significantly below grade level often benefit from approximately 60–80 hours of structured intervention, although individual needs may vary.
The earlier intervention begins, the better. Children can benefit from evidence-based instruction as soon as reading difficulties become apparent, even in preschool or early elementary years.
Many children develop confidence and begin to enjoy reading once they receive instruction that matches their learning needs and experience success through structured, supportive teaching.
Yes. High-quality online tutoring can be highly effective when delivered by trained learning specialists using evidence-based instructional methods. Many families appreciate the flexibility and convenience of virtual sessions.
Most students benefit from tutoring 2–3 times per week, depending on their goals, learning needs, and availability. We work with families to develop a schedule that best supports consistent progress.
No. A formal diagnosis is not required to begin tutoring. We work with children who have diagnosed learning differences as well as students who simply need additional academic support.
We carefully match each child with a learning specialist based on their diagnosis, learning needs, personality, goals, schedule, and preferred tutoring format.
Once your intake form is received and we identify the best tutor for your child, we'll contact you with available schedules so tutoring can begin as soon as possible.
