A normed word identification test designed to quickly determine a
student's approximate reading level through graded word lists.
Grade Range
Starting Level
Show the student one list at a time starting with 2 or 3 lists below their grade level. Mark a check for every word pronounced correctly without help.
If they correct themselves (≤ 5 sec), score as correct.
If they pause (> 8 sec), move to the next word.
Stop testing when they miss 3 words in a level.

One more section to go. Take a breather — the next part uses real words instead of nonsense ones.
These are real words from texts at each grade level. We work upward through grade lists until your child reaches their ceiling.
The word lists are the published San Diego Quick Assessment (La Pray & Ross, 1969).
We have all the data we need.
The scoring sheet is ready. Teachers can download it below as a PDF for their records.

Print the word lists. Fold or cut pages so only one list is visible at a time to prevent student overwhelm.
Ask the student to read words aloud. Start 2-3 grade levels below their actual placement.
Note independent (1 error), instructional (2 errors), and frustration (3 errors) levels for baseline analysis.
